The benefits of Hirudoid in dry skin or senile xerosis are due to the moisturizing properties and effect of the active ingredient P1PS on the connective tissue. The stimulating effect on the synthesis of glucosaminglycans and collagens probably counteracts the side effects of corticoid treatment

Senile xerosis is a disease showing symptoms of dry skin, pruritus and erythema mainly affecting the hip, upper and lower extremities in middle aged and elderly patients. Onset, relapse and aggravation preferably occur in winter.

The clinical usefulness of Hirudoid ointment in senile xerosis was evaluated in an intraindividual comparative study (Harada).

Common agents for the treatment of senile xerosis are moisturizing ointments or ointments containing steroids and urea. The use of steroid-containing ointments is limited because of their known side-effects, particularly during long-term use. Therefore a urea-containing ointment, established and approved in the treatment of senile xerosis was chosen as a comparator to evaluate the efficacy of Hirudoid. The study was performed in 120 patients.

治疗老年性干燥症的常用制剂有：保湿软膏、激素软膏和尿素软膏。激素软膏由于有通常所知的副作用，特别是在长期应用时，故其应用是受限的。因此，尿素软膏，作为被认可的用于老年性干燥症的常用制剂，被选为对照药物用于评估喜疗妥的疗效。本试验的受试对象共有120位患者。

 

After two weeks of treatment the improvement rates in 118 analyzed cases (better than "fairly improved") were 94% for both preparations. A positive assessment for clinical usefulness was made in 95% for both preparations. Side effects were not observed.

Thus, Hirudoid showed to have an equivalent efficacy and safety to the approved preparation. Based on these results, Hirudoid ointment is considered to be a useful drug for the treatment of senile xerosis.
